{ Phillip Alexander, Lead Guitar }
My name is Phillip Alexander, but most friends and family just call me Flip. My dad has called me that ever since I was little, and it just stuck with me. I was born in Adairsville, Georgia in December of 86, and have lived here ever since. So here’s my story and my testimony.
I grew up in a Christian home, and my family has always been involved in church. I asked the Lord Jesus Christ into my life and to save me one night at a youth conference in Tennessee. It was the most incredible thing I have ever experienced in my life. I was twelve years old. A few years later my mom bought me a guitar. I began taking lessons, and immediately fell in love with playing. I’ve always enjoyed music, and was constantly looking for different bands. I started playing some small things at my church and for the youth group. Later, a friend and I tried to start a small band, but it never went very far. We decided we would just stick to playing at church. One night my youth group was performing a skit and had invited another church to help out. That was when I met Chad. We didn’t talk that night, but all the while God was working behind the scenes on His master plan.
After church, Chad must have seen us playing around on the guitar, because shortly afterwards I received a call from him asking if I would be interested in trying out for a guitar position in his praise band. I was seventeen years old. Little did I know that moment was where my journey with Day Seven began. I never really knew or understood the call that God had on my life until I was about twenty years old. Let me rewind a little bit before I move on. Toward the end of high school and the beginning of college I began to stray away from God. Little by little I kept slipping farther and farther away from what I knew and believed was right. I gave in to peer pressure and allowed myself to do and say things that I knew were wrong. I struggled with alcohol abuse that continued to get worse through most of college. I was hiding my sin from the band and from my family. It was slowly tearing me down.
Finally, it had gotten to the point where I almost lost my position in the band, as well as other things in my life that I thought would always be there. God had broken me. He put me face down on my knees and told me that a decision had to be made. It was so clear! I was either going to be obedient to my Savior, or I was going to lose everything. Isaiah 30:21 says, whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” After that I rededicated my life to the Lord and am doing the best that I can to serve Him with all that I am. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still human, and I still fail. None of us are perfect. There was only One that was perfect. He gave His life so that we could have everlasting life.
I’ve always been an independent person who has always tried to do things on my own, but I’ve come to learn that God doesn’t want us to do things ourselves. The bible tells us that apart from God we can do nothing. John 15:5. God desires a relationship with us all. The relationship is key! Its how we grow in the word and how we learn to make it through the storms of life that come our way. There will be times in your life where things don’t make sense. There will be situations and circumstances that you aren’t always going to understand, but the truth is that there is a God. He has a will for your life, and if you strive with everything that you have to seek Him in all that you do, He will make a clear path for you. Sometimes the path itself won’t make sense, but if you take steps of faith even without our own understanding, the results will be miraculous. For example, God told Abraham to get up and go, and He would show him the way. He didn’t understand how or where he was going, but he had the faith that God would provide. Faith requires action, and action requires adjustment in our lives to what God is doing. I am thankful to God for all His many blessings in my life. I am thankful to Day Seven, and am truly humbled by all that He has done and will do through Day Seven ministries. I thank Him for the opportunity that he has set before me. You know it constantly amazes me now as I look back over the years that there has always been a guitar placed before me.
I see now that it was God preparing me for what he had in store, there has always been a decision that had to be made whether to follow Christ or follow the world. Yes, I failed many times (and still do), but it was through the failures that my Savior grew me to be obedient. He grew me to trust in Him. I don’t deserve to be playing guitar in this band with this amazing bunch of guys, but God saw fit to use a sinner that just desired to be used by his Heavenly Father no matter what the cost. I thank Him everyday for His grace and mercy that He has poured out on my life, and every opportunity I get to stand for Him. I pray that all the praise, honor, and the glory go to Him and not me. It is all because of Jesus Christ that I am able to do anything.
I just want to encourage all who are reading this to follow Christ, and through the failure and the hard times we all face, know that our heavenly Father is right there ready and willing to pick you up and wash everything clean again. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. Thank you all for the support of the band and Day Seven Ministries. We are grateful and love you all, hope to see you soon. God Bless you.
